She thanks the Markhams for the kind letter of sympathy for her grandfathers death. She discusses the how she hates the war and is planning a concert to raise money. Wants the Markhams to be her guests at the concert. She would like autographed photos of Mr. M and his books to sell.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
